We are surrounded by water, sea, coastline, rivers, lakes and canals. Our cities, towns and villages are built around waterways; Water reaches into the heart of major population centres. It flows through to all corners of our countryside, from mountains to the sea, but importantly, they provide the places we work, rest and play.
Discover what the Paddlers’ Code means to paddlers, and how you can use it as a guide to your customers and help them enjoy our beautiful waterways responsibly.

During over thirty years of working in adventure activities Tim has paddled canoe, kayak, shoe, raft & SUP. Whether for fun, work, or in competition he has delivered taster sessions on canals, multi-day expeditions in remote locations and lots of things in between. For the last twelve years he has worked as a regulator, inspector and expert witness in the context of instructor led adventure activities. As the head of service at Adventure RMS his role is to support an inspectorate of over 20 inspectors undertaking safety management reviews for the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) and the Ministry of Defence.
Whilst every club, centre and school are different, there are areas of safety management systems & procedures which consistently challenge even the most diligent and well meaning. If you’ve ‘found’ something in your operations that doesn’t feel quite right the chances are following that thread will lead you to one of five places. This session is all about the top five elements of a safety management system which most concerns might lead you to think about. It should be of interest to those who think they may have ‘found’ a thread to pull, but even more so for those who think they haven’t – knowing where the weaknesses might be is such a better place to be than believing you don’t have any!'
